Mitigating modulation instability in Brillouin distributed fibre sensors
A thorough study of the generation of modulation instability (MI) in distributed Brillouin fibre sensors is presented. ASE noise co-propagating with the pump pulses within the MI gain spectrum has been identified to be an important factor seeding modulation instability and reducing its power threshold. The paper describes how optical narrowband filtering reduces the pump depletion resulting fro...
متن کاملModelling the depletion length induced by modulation instability in distributed optical fibre sensors [9157-177]
An analytical model for the depletion length of modulation instability in single-mode optical fibres is proposed. The model gives the possibility to determine the maximum sensing distance that distributed optical fibre sensors can reach before being limited by the pump depletion induced by modulation instability. The important role of the noise level in the evolution of both modulation instabil...

A useful method for eliminating the detrimental effect of laser frequency instability on Brillouin signals by employing the self-heterodyne detection of Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering is presented. From the analysis of Brillouin scattering spectra from fibers with different lengths measured by heterodyne detection, the maximum usable pulse width immune to laser frequency instability is obtai...
متن کاملImpact of self phase modulation on the performance of Brillouin distributed fibre sensors [7653-140]
The spectral broadening of the pump pulse through self phase modulation in a time domain distributed Brillouin sensor is demonstrated to have a non-negligible detrimental effect, leading to a doubling of the effective gain linewidth after some 20 km in standard conditions. The theoretical modeling is fully confirmed by experimental results.

Optical fibre sensors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering have now clearly demonstrated their excellent capability for long-range distributed strain and temperature measurements. The Brillouin interaction causes the coupling between optical and acoustical waves when a resonance condition is fulfilled. It turns out that this resonance condition is strain and temperature-dependent, so that d...
